Golden Globes 2020: The Complete List of Winners and Losers
The big question that came up at the Golden Globes 2020 was how well Joker would do. Nominated for Best Motion Picture (Drama) as well as nominations for Joaquin Phoenix for the main actor and Todd Phillips for the best director. The nominations were another milestone after Black Panther was taken seriously on “comic films,” especially when Martin Scorsese, whose film The Irishman competes in the same categories, said that Marvel films are not a cinema.
Unfortunately, the Irishman came up short when it came to awards. During today’s ceremony, moderated and skewered by comedian Ricky Gervais, Joker won two globes, including a Best Actor win for Joaquin Phoenix. Scorsese saw in 1917 that Sam Mendes was recognized as the best director and best film for his unique World War I film.
Netflix had three films as serious competitors during today’s “Globes”: “Marriage Story”, “Dolemite is My Name” and “The Two Popes”, although only Laura Dern, for her role in “Marriage Story”. completed with an award. As with the expected favorites, Quentin Tarantino received a screenplay award for “Once Upon A Time” in Hollywood. Brad Pitt won for his co-star work as a stuntman Cliff Booth and the film won the Best Comedy Night Award at the end of the year.
Bong Joon-ho’s parasite, which seems to be nominated for best international feature film and best film at this year’s Oscars, took hold of the foreign-language statue of the Golden Globes. As for other surprises, Elton John won a globe for writing a song for his own biopic, while the stop-motion animated film Missing Link Frozen II and Toy Story 4 overcame and won the animated awards. On the TV side, Fleabag and Chernobyl showed strong presentations, but it’s really just about the succession victories. (Cue the theme song.)
