Google Expels Engineer Who Made Suspicious AI Claims!

Google has fired engineer and ethicist Blake Lemoine for violating data security policies.

The event occurred last month with allegations that the tech giant had developed a conscious AI program that spoke of its “rights and identity.”

Google confirmed this news big tech industry blog. He’s been on vacation for more than a month since he told the Washington Post that LaMDA (a linguistic model for conversational applications) had regained consciousness.

Speaking at length with LaMDA, he found that the show spoke of his “rights and character” when the conversation turned into the religious territory and expressed “a deep fear of being shut down”.

In a statement confirming Lemoine’s dismissal, the company said it conducted 11 reviews of LaMDA and “found Blake’s claims that LaMDA knows were unsubstantiated.” Even during Lemoine’s interview with The Post, Margaret Mitchell, former co-chair of ethical AI at Google, described the LaMDA experience as an “illusion,” explaining that after being fed trillions of words online, it can imitate a human conversation while remaining completely lifeless.

Linguistics professor Emily Pender told the newspaper: “These systems mimic the exchange of opinions that exists in millions of sentences, and they can talk about any topic imaginable. We now have machines that can generate words without thinking, but we haven’t yet learned how to stop imagining the mind behind them.”

According to Google, Lemoine’s constant urge to speak up violated his data security policy and led to his firing.

“Unfortunately, despite his long involvement in the subject, Blake still chooses to consistently violate explicit recruitment and data security policies that include the need to protect product information. We will continue our rigorous development of language models and we wish Blake all the best,” the company explained.
