Google Takes Over: The End of Fitbit

When Google said it was buying Fitbit, it was hard to believe it would suit the company. At first, we were almost sure that things would get better. After all, both Fitbit and Google services got new features and worked better together. But as time went by, things changed. It’s not unusual for a big company to buy a smaller one to get good ideas, which happened with Fitbit. The brand won’t be as important anymore, while Google will add all of Fitbit’s history to its Pixel lineup.

Some reports, which quote people in the Fitness community, say that the company’s fate was first made public in 2019. Even so, the fact that Fitbit wearables started to lose features over time made the whole thing very sad.

THE GLORIOUS HISTORY OF FITBIT

If you care little about wearables, you might not know much about Fitbit’s history. But the company has been in this segment for a long time. It has changed a lot over the past few years, and when smartwatches became a thing, it got into that market. Fitbit was the first company to make a “smart device.” Its first one came out in 2009. It wasn’t brilliant—just a simple fitness tracker—but when we look at what came after, we can say it was ahead of its time. After all, health is a big part of smartwatches.

The device was a simple clip-on pedometer with a motion sensor that tracked the distance walked. It could also estimate how many calories you burned and how well you slept. Do you recognize all of these things? They were later added to smartwatches to make them what they are today.

THE PEDOMETER THAT GOT EVERYTHING GOING

The Fitbit pedometer automatically sent all data to your computer via a neat little piece of software that would later be known as Fitbit Connect. Users could put in their daily food and calorie intake with the software. All these features would later reach the modern Fitbit app we know.

With the release of the Fitbit Flex, Fitbit’s story in the watch market became apparent. It came out in 2013, and most people who saw it liked it. The Fitbit Force, Charge, and Alta, as well as the Ionic and Inspire, came after this watch. Users were very happy with the Fitbit Alta. Users liked the brand, which was the first sign of a market for smartwatches, because of its solid fitness-related features.

Fitbit Premium was a good idea

As you may know, the market got too full when there were too many brands. Because of this, Fitbit started looking at other markets to find new ways to make money. Fitbit had to find different ways to make money because many other companies were trying to do the same thing. The company made Fitbit Premium for this reason. It was a way for the company to make more money by giving users a better overview of their data and guided workouts and meditations. The Fitbit Premium was not liked by all users, which is clear. To win over users, the company started to offer free trials of Fitbit Premium to show users that it was worth it.

THE FALL

Alphabet, the big company that runs Google, came up with an offer for Fitbit by the end of 2019. That was a good deal for Fitbit because Google would take it out of a market full of products. Google’s goal wasn’t just to save Fitbit but also to take some of the good ideas from the company and use them in a new, better product. The search giant was making the Pixel Watch, its first smartwatch. Fitbit’s long history of collecting health data and its easy-to-use design would give the search giant an edge when launching its product. It took a long time for the Pixel Watch to get to the market in late 2022.

The Current Version of FITBIT Has Died

When Fitbit was released, it heralded a new age for the ubiquitous intelligent watches and bracelets. Everything is “ordinary” now, as in commonplace. Smartwatches only existed in the Fitbit health trackers, however. The market has progressed to the point where a user chooses a smartwatch primarily for its fitness monitoring features. To advance this market, companies are continuously researching and creating new features. Because the concept of a smartphone worn on the wrist did not sell well, the need for devices that monitor our health and help us improve has been entirely transformed by fitness trackers.

The pioneering business has a bleak future, unfortunately. As Google is doing things slowly, we believe the company will be around for a while. Unfortunately, once the Pixel Watch becomes the clear frontrunner, Google will inevitably phase out the older Wear OS watches. Fitbit may continue to exist as an online service or app. We anticipate that the hardware produced by the brand will be discontinued soon.
