Green Middle East Initiative Summit Appreciates the Kingdom’s Efforts to Preserve the Environment and Reduce the Effects of Climate Change

The second edition of the “Green Middle East Initiative” summit issued a presidential statement, the text of which is as follows:

At the joint invitation of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Prime Minister, Verdi The Middle East Summit, in its second edition, was held in Sharm El Sheikh, in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in the presence of some leaders of Middle Eastern and African countries and international officials in the field of the environment and climate change , Monday, Rabi` al-Thani 13, 1444 AH, corresponding to 7 November 2022 AD, under the joint Saudi-Egyptian presidency.

The assembled leaders appreciated the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the field of environmental conservation and limiting the effects of climate change, in particularly the two initiatives of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, “Green Saudi Arabia” and “Green Middle East”, for their positive impact on environment in the countries of the region and around the world, improving the quality of life and addressing the challenges of climate change.

The leaders appreciated the efforts of the Arab Republic of Egypt and His Excellency the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, for hosting the second Green Middle East Summit in his country, in coinciding with the holding of the Climate Change Conference (COP27).

Leaders stressed the importance of joint teamwork to achieve the desired goals of the Green Middle East Initiative, believing in the importance of its goals which are achieved through concerted efforts and the active contribution of the countries of the region.

Leaders said the second Green Middle East Initiative will help accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 and achieve prosperity for the peoples of the member states.

Leaders stressed the importance of achieving climate and environmental goals by adhering to international conventions in matters approved by the United Nations, contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Organization goals for the year 2030 and the United Nations Decade for the restoration of ecosystems and the determination to achieve integration and close coordination between Member States and to invest them in increasing their collective capacity to tackle the challenges of climate change.

The leaders gathered affirmed the commitment of the Member States of the initiative to implement their commitments and commitments under the Paris Agreement and to take the necessary measures to limit the average increase in global temperature to the levels set by the Agreement Paris.

Leaders reiterated the importance of working to strengthen support for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, in a way that contributes to economic diversification and the eradication of poverty.

The leaders underlined the strengthening of the integration of the optimal energy mix for the production of electricity, the support for the absorption of the electricity grids for the injection of renewable energy and the contribution to the achievement of climate change objectives through the signing of protocols. and electricity interconnection agreements that have been signed with many countries in regions such as Iraq, Egypt and Jordan, and what will constitute an extension of cooperation in the electricity interconnection grid with the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States.

Leaders affirmed support for efforts to reduce emissions in Middle East and beyond, by signing bilateral and multilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding in the field of clean energy, which will advance and expand cooperation in the field of clean energy and its technologies in this field.

Leaders stressed the importance of joint cooperation to address and manage the challenges arising from greenhouse gas emissions through a holistic approach and various clean technologies available, including the circular carbon economy approach and its four pillars, which represent a integrated and comprehensive framework that countries can benefit from and its applications in developing climate action plans in in line with each country’s national priorities and conditions.

The assembled leaders reiterated their emphasis on strengthening joint action to support efforts to develop and disseminate modern carbon capture, use and storage and decarbonisation technologies, in particularly from energy-intensive and emission-intensive sectors, while promoting investment in this field to contribute to the international effort to tackle emissions.

Leaders affirmed their commitment to take an appropriate national approach to bring about a just transformation of a low-carbon development model in able to adapt to the effects of climate change, based on proven scientific recommendations, shared responsibilities and principles, first of all fairness and justice and taking into account the national circumstances of each country.

Leaders stressed the importance of joint international action in the field of “clean fuel” solutions to provide food, which contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in general, and the seventh goal in particular, which aspires to universal access to reliable and sustainable energy at the most affordable cost.

Leaders expressed their determination to continue cooperation with friendly countries and regional and international organizations to ensure the achievement of the Green Middle East Summit objectives and to serve the interests of member states and international partners.

Leaders affirmed their commitment to creating a better future for generations futurebelieving in the importance of the initiative’s aspiration for the sustainable development of the region and the conservation and restoration of biodiversity in it is contained for the benefit of the countries and peoples of the whole world.

Leaders reiterated the importance of emphasizing the mobilization and provision of the necessary funding for the Green Middle East Initiative and for all technologies and solutions that help address emissions through bilateral, regional and international frameworks and coordination. in This picture. welcomed the financial commitments provided by a number of voices and funds, in in particular, the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund for International Development.

Leaders stressed that implementing the Green Middle East Initiative’s goals will help reduce and manage greenhouse gas emissions from all sources, including renewable energy and clean technologies for hydrocarbon emissions management, and the removal of millions of tons of carbon emissions through technical and natural solutions.

Leaders renewed their determination to make efforts to achieve the initiative’s goals to reduce soil degradation, restore green cover, preserve biodiversity, adapt to climate change and reduce its negative effects to reduce economic losses, support the sustainable development and achieving prosperity.

Leaders renewed their resolve to agree to strengthen cooperation and support to improve natural resource management and combat land degradation and desertification, with a commitment to joint efforts to improve water and food security in the face the negative effects of climate change.

Leaders stressed the importance of cross-border cooperation in various fields, in particularly with regard to the management of resources vulnerable to climate change, in so as to strengthen common action frameworks, whether in the bilateral, regional or collective framework.

The assembled leaders called on relevant countries, organizations, regional and international bodies, financial institutions and the private sector to provide financial and technical support to the initiative to enable it to achieve its ambitious goals at the national, regional and international levels.
