Guterres: Hezbollah must be a political party and nothing more

After his recent visit in Lebanon last week, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that the current situation is very difficult, urging politicians to carry out reforms that end the tragedy.

The UN official also touched on the role of Hezbollah, and called on the militia to play its role as a political party.

Support the Lebanese army

He believed this could only be achieved by strengthening other Lebanese institutions, quoting the newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat.

He also stressed that the United Nations supports the Lebanese army despite its scarce resources, pointing out that the military institution itself needs tremendous support from the international community.

refugee crisis

In a related context, Guterres made it clear that the refugee crisis poses a major dilemma for Lebanon, expressing concern about the situation. in Syria, because it is a country that lives in a situation of “no war and none pace”.

I also believe that the only serious effort to be made to overcome the problem is to work to revive a serious dialogue between the regime and the opposition, because the Syrians must finally understand that the only way to get rid of all foreign forces in Syria is whether they can meet together, according to his expression.

He also felt that the first step is the constitutional committee, after which free and fair elections and then a political process is ensured, adding that this is the only way to resolve the refugee crisis and ensure their return and thus relieve the pressure on Lebanon.

An unprecedented crisis

Interestingly, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres arrived in Beirut last Sunday, stressing the need to restore the work of constitutional institutions which, according to him, have been paralyzed by politicians.

He stressed that the Lebanese people suffer greatly from the repercussions of an unprecedented economic crisis.
