Guterres meets Putin today to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine

Almost two months after the attack on Ukraine began, Russian President Vladimir Putin will receive UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Moscow on Tuesday.

Putin and Guterres’ meeting in the Kremlin is likely to focus on a greater diplomatic role for the United Nations in ending the crisis in Ukraine, as well as providing access to UN humanitarian aid and opening safe passageways for civilians to exit, in particular from the besieged port city of Mariupol.

The UN Secretary-General plans to speak with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov first on Tuesday at noon.

A press conference is therefore planned, according to the Russian foreign ministry. Subsequently, Guterres plans to meet Putin in the Kremlin.

After his visit in Russia, the UN Secretary-General is expected to travel through Poland to Ukraine, where he has in plans to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday.
