Hawkeye: Why Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova is hunting Clint Barton after Black Widow

After 18 months without a Marvel movie due to the pandemic, Black Widow finally hit cinemas. The MCU prequel gave Scarlett Johansson a solo movie for her Avenger Natasha Romanoff before her death in Avengers Endgame. Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers Infinity War, the blockbuster introduced her Black Widow programme assassin sister Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh.

But given that Hawkeye and Black Widow were such good friends and had an emotional goodbye in Avengers Endgame, why on earth is Yelena now hunting Clint Barton in his Disney+ show?

The answer lies in the Black Widow post-credits scene, set after the events of Endgame and Natasha’s death.

Yelena is seen visiting a memorial grave to her sister-figure when she’s approached by Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Both an anti-hero and villain in Marvel Comics, she appears to be something of an evil Nick Fury who could be assembling the Thunderbolts, a team of reformed supervillains.

Having debuted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and recruited John Walker’s US Agent, she looks to be doing the same with Yelena in that Black Widow post-credits scene, who we learn is already in her employ.

Approaching Nat’s sister at the grave, Valentina shows her a picture of her next target for assassination.

Handing Yelena an iPad, the Countess says: “Maybe you’d like a shot at the man responsible for your sister’s death?”

Taking the tablet, she sees a picture of Hawkeye with the same haircut he had in Avengers Endgame.

Of course, unknown to Yelena, Hawkeye didn’t kill Black Widow. During Avengers Endgame, they had travelled back in time to the planet Morag in 2014 with Nebula and War Machine.

The two assassins then took the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ship the Benatar and flew off to Vormir to locate the Soul Stone.

Upon arrival, Clint and Natasha found themselves face to face with Red Skull, the Keeper of the Infinity gem.

Both tried to sacrifice themselves so that the other could obtain it but Black Widow won, allowing Hawkeye to live and see his family resurrected.

Of course, it doesn’t appear clear if the rest of the world know that the Avengers went back in time in Endgame or if how Natasha died was made public.

Whatever the case, Yelena is mistaken, hence why she debuted at Hawkeye episode 4’s conclusion trying to kill Clint.

No doubt the truth will be shared with the new Black Widow in the two remaining episodes of the series and they will be teaming up alongside Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop.

Hawkeye, Black Widow and Avengers Endgame are streaming on Disney+ now.
