Roommates, we send our prayers to the relatives of Herman Boone following the news of his death. Many of you may know Mr. Boone and his work, thanks to the 2000 film “Remember The Titans”, which starred Denzel Washington as Boone.
According to ESPN, Aly Khan Johnson, an assistant coach for Boone, said he died at his home in Alexandria, VA. Johnson revealed that Boone is battling cancer and that he will be visiting the trainer on a regular basis. He said he planned to see him on Wednesday when he learned of his death.
Boone led the T.C. Williams High School football team to the state championship in 1971.
Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings Jr., the director of schools in Alexandria City said, “He has touched many lives and hearts around the world. He has been an inspiration to so many people, including me as one of his former students. Alexandria City public schools were fortunate to have him as an icon at such a critical time in our history. He will be greatly missed. “
“Remember The Titians” displayed T.C. Williams’ trip to the state championship as they battled racial tension as their team integrated. They faced opponents, coaches and referees who tried to shoot them down with nasty behavior.
Aly Khan Johnson, who became an assistant coach for Boone in 1972, said, “When I arrived, you saw children working together, dating. It was a fraternity that you would see. As you know, athletics does something for a community, and it happened at the right time for that community. “
Johnson added that a funeral home run by Boone’s wife will take care of the arrangements, which are not yet finalized.
As previously reported, last week it was announced that James “Radio” Kennedy, who inspired the 2003 film “Radio” with Cuba Gooding Jr., has died.
We continue to send our prayers to relatives of Herman Boone during this time.
