Dirty bedding is often referred to as a reservoir of potentially dangerous microorganisms.
Various studies have shown that it takes a short time for mattresses to become a source of pathogens, even when covered in sheets, and experts say this could pave the way for many deadly diseases.
Some studies have linked soiled bedding to serious illnesses such as pneumonia, appendicitis, and gonorrhea (caused by cocci).
According to sleep experts at Bed Kingdom, every night during sleep, the body releases fluids and oils, as well as thousands of dead skin cells. This attracts dust mites, which excrete feces associated with allergies, asthma, rhinitis, and eczema.
This is why many health factors require more frequent washing of bedding, such as asthma.
Bed Kingdom experts explain: “Sick people are advised to change bedding daily.”
They add that the feces and dead bodies of dust mites can cause severe allergic reactions in some people.
Symptoms may include coughing, sneezing, rash, itchy eyes, and runny nose. Dust mites are also a very common cause of asthma, “so it’s good for your comfort and health to wash sheets often.”
Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Alok Viya explained that our body contains more bacteria than cells. When dead skin cells fall off the sheet, these bacteria can thrive, and when they return to the skin, they can lead to folliculitis, a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become inflamed and cause itching and soreness.
In addition to irritation, transmission has also been shown to be possible through soiled laundry.
Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most dangerous bacteria because it is more contagious than other species.
It is also closely associated with severe health conditions such as pneumonia.
Appendicitis is also dangerous when bacteria or parasites enter the digestive system.
This can happen when the tube leading to the colon and appendix gets blocked by stool, explains Johns Hopkins Medicine.
And if the appendix ruptures, it could lead to “severe and fatal infections.”
To prevent bed sheets from becoming a carrier of infection, Bed Kingdom experts recommend taking the time to wash bed linen at least once a week.
