Social links were first introduced in Persona 3, and many features Atlus was trying out in the game didn’t make it into the sequels. Several Social Link features from these sequels are now in Persona 3 Reload. Still, developers have kept one feature from Persona 3 that has yet to make it into other games: the Reverse.
In other Persona games, you can make bad choices during Social Link or Confidant scenes, forcing you to spend time with your friends between scenes. This is also true of Persona 3 Reload. Still, you can also make terrible decisions that cause your relationship to grind to a halt. This is what the game calls a Reverse.
What are the Causes of a Reverse in Persona 3 Reload
In Japanese dating games, a familiar game mechanic known as the “relationship bomb” has inspired the creation of the Social Link system in Persona 3 Reload. When players trigger a “relationship bomb,” it causes their relationship with the person in question to plummet significantly. The concept of the Reverse in Persona 3 Reload is derived from this game mechanic.
To trigger a Reverse, you must do or say something that is not just bad but is actively offensive. This event only occurs if you are on the character’s romance path. Before making a choice, Persona 3 Reload will alert you, saying, “If I make the wrong move here, I might upset her.”
For example, during the Rank 5 cutscene for Justice Arcana, you can initiate the romance path by stating, “Yeah, she’s in love.” Later on, Chihiro will ask the protagonist to do something with her, and you will be presented with three options: “Hold her hand,” “Kiss her,” or “Speak to her softly.” If you choose to kiss her, Chihiro will become angry, and her Arcana card will flip over and turn red.
How to Fix Reverse Social Links in Persona 3 Reload
When playing Persona 3 Reload, you might encounter a Reverse character. The Reverse character will still appear in their usual spot. Still, the card that marks their availability will be upside-down and in red. This means that you have made a mistake in your interactions with them, causing them to become distant and unresponsive.
Fortunately, there is a way to make amends and restore the relationship with a Reverse character. You can speak to them and either apologize or beg for their forgiveness. However, it’s important to note that this is not a one-time fix. You must do this three times on three separate days to flip their card back over and then wait for a fourth day to spend time with them again.
It’s worth noting that speaking to a Reverse character can save time, as they will often give you more information about themselves and their story. However, another option exists if you struggle to restore your relationship with them.
Persona 3 Reload includes a convenient Rewind feature in the System menu that lets you return to an earlier free period. By replaying the Social Link scene and making a different decision, you can avoid causing the Reverse altogether. It’s important to note that some players might not want to take the easy way out, but it’s an option if you want to use it.
