Idris Elba Explains His Refusal to Label Himself as a ‘Black Actor’ in Passionate Rant

Idris Elba has spoken about racism in Hollywood and why he no longer identifies as a “black actor”. He believes that doing so puts him in a box and takes away the power from racism. He wants to be seen as an actor, not the “first black” actor. Ahead of the release of his new movie Luther: The Fallen Sun, Elba discussed his views in an interview with Esquire. He also discussed how he wanted to be an actor because it was his calling, not because of a lack of diversity. The movie is set to be released in select cinemas on February 24 and on Netflix on March 10.
