In 4 annexed Ukrainian regions… 80,000 Russian passports were issued

Russia announced on Thursday it had issued passports to more than 80,000 people in four regions of Ukraine (Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson) and that Moscow has announced its annexation of its lands, which are operations not recognized by the international community.

“Since the annexation of the four regions to the Russian Federation, in In accordance with the law, more than 80,000 people were granted a passport as citizens of the Russian Federation,” the Russian Interior Ministry said, according to local news agencies.

And last September, Russia staged “referendums” that the West deemed “false”, aiming to annex Ukrainian regions under the control of Moscow forces in Donetsk and Luhansk (east), Zaporizhya and Kherson (south). .

Meanwhile, the international community has condemned these annexations, which Moscow approved in early October but has not recognized.

Since the announcement of this annexation, Russian forces have withdrawn from some of these lands, including the city of Kherson, the capital of the Kherson region.

This withdrawal was also a major setback for the Russian military, especially since it was the first major Ukrainian city to fall into its hands since the conflict broke out on 24 February.

Even before the start of the Russian operation in Ukraine, Moscow had distributed hundreds of thousands of Russian passports in the separatist regions of eastern Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the Russian attack on the territory of the western neighbor, the Kremlin has facilitated the mechanism for Ukrainians to obtain Russian citizenship.

Observers believe that Russia is trying, through this strategy, to strengthen the idea of its right to these Ukrainian regions by emphasizing that its residents are recently naturalized Russian citizens.
