In-N-Out Expanding with New Restaurant in Washington, Marking Ninth Region Venture

In-N-Out, the renowned fast-food chain known for its delectable ‘animal style’ burgers and fries, is making waves beyond the sun-soaked shores of California. The company is making strides in their expansion plans across America, with a proposed new restaurant in the state of Washington. If approved, this location would mark the first In-N-Out establishment in the Evergreen State, expanding their presence to a total of nine regions.

According to a spokesman for the restaurant, the new store, situated in the city of Ridgefield, is still in the early stages of development. The restaurant is eagerly awaiting a permit from the City, and once construction commences, it is estimated to take between eight to nine months to complete.

In-N-Out’s expansion into Washington is part of a larger shift in strategy for the beloved burger chain, as they venture beyond their California roots. Established in 1948, In-N-Out has garnered a loyal cult following, thanks to its nostalgic decor and fresh, high-quality burgers. Its popularity has even attracted celebrity fans, including Meghan Markle, who was photographed picking up an order from the restaurant in September.

For years, In-N-Out limited its restaurants to California due to its commitment to using only fresh burger patties. This meant that all locations had to be within a 300-mile radius of an In-N-Out distribution center. However, in 1992, the company made its first foray outside of California by opening a store in Las Vegas, Nevada. Subsequently, In-N-Out expanded further, with restaurants in Arizona in 2000 and Utah in 2008.

Presently, the burger chain boasts 275 locations in California, 43 in Texas, and 34 in Arizona. Additionally, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Texas all have at least one In-N-Out restaurant. The company’s recent announcement of plans to open multiple locations in Tennessee by 2026 and another in Albuquerque, New Mexico has generated excitement among fans.

Owner Lynsi Snyder, in a 2018 interview with Forbes, expressed her reservations about expanding to every state, as she believed it might diminish the brand’s appeal. She stated, “I don’t see us stretched across the whole U.S. I don’t see us in every state. Take Texas—draw a line up and just stick to the left. That’s in my lifetime.”

When In-N-Out enters a new state, it often creates a frenzy among eager fans. For instance, when the company opened its Idaho restaurant in December, customers endured eight-hour lines in freezing weather just to savor their mouthwatering burgers.

Adding to its unique identity, In-N-Out incorporates strong Christian beliefs into its operation. They print Bible verses on their packaging, such as Mark 3:16 and Proverbs 3:5, featured on soda cups and milkshakes. Different verses are associated with specific menu items, creating a thoughtful and meaningful experience.

The company, founded by Harry and Esther Snyder and now owned and operated by their granddaughter Lynsi Snyder, holds a distinctive place in the fast-food industry. Lynsi, who became the president of In-N-Out in 2010, inherited full control of the company in 2017 and holds a net worth of $4.2 billion.

Looking ahead, In-N-Out’s expansion into Washington signals the company’s most eastern advancement to date. While it is still too early to determine an opening date or anticipate the outcome of the development application, the potential arrival of In-N-Out to the Evergreen State is undoubtedly cause for excitement among local burger enthusiasts.
