In the Heights first premiered in 2005 before the musical went to Broadway in 2008 where it was a big success, winning four Tony Awards for the Broadway production. The show saw Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical’s writer, star as the main character of Usnavi De La Vega in the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions.

The role of Usnavi De La Vega will be played by Anthony Ramos in the upcoming film production.
Lin won’t be completely absent from the movie, however.
Instead, he will play Piraguero, the Piragua Guy, who was played by Eliseo Román on Broadway and Off-Broadway.

The Piragua guy has a small role in the movie – with one song where he sings about his attempt to compete with Mister Softee, an ice cream seller nearby.
He later performs a reprise of the song, where he is grateful for the hot weather in helping his business.
The rest of the film cast are not well known in Hollywood, except the main star, who has recently had roles in A Star is Born and the movie version of Hamilton.
Brooklyn 99 star Stephanie Beatriz has a role as Carla, while Marc Anthony plays Mr de la Vega.

The other main characters Benny, Nina and Vanessa are played by Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace and Melissa Barrera.
Olga Merediz plays Abuela Claudia, the matriarch of Washington Heights, while Daphne Rubin-Vega plays Daniela and Gregory Diaz IV plays Sonny de la Vega.
Graffiti Pete is played by Noah Catala, Jimmy Smits is Kevin and Dascha Polanco is Cuca.
As well as that, some Christopher Jackson and Seth Stewart, who were in the original Broadway cast, have cameo roles, as well as actor Patrick Page.

What is In The Heights about?
The official synopsis reads: “Lights up on Washington Heights… The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community.
“At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi, who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.
“In the Heights fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda’s kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu’s lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.”
The screenplay has been written by Quiara Alegría Hudes, as was the original book, while John M Chu, who directed Crazy Rich Asians, is behind the camera helming the film.
Songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda will also feature in the film, while choreography has been created by Christopher Scott.
In The Heights is out in cinemas on June 18
