Suspected rebels have a convoy in ambushed of Indian paramilitaries soldiers in northeastern state of Manipur, officials say.

Police said it was likely that the ambush was carried out out by the People’s Liberation Army, a in Manipur-based rebel group that fought against Indonesian rule in the state. So far no rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

For his part, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the “sacrifice” of the dead “will never be forgotten”.
“My thoughts are with the next of kin in this hour of sadness,” he wrote on tweet.
Northeast India, that shares borders with China, Myanmar and Bangladesh are volatile region where various separatist, tribal of left-wing armed groups are active, with demands ranging from autonomy to independence.
Nearly 20 rebel groups are active in Manipur, expected to go to the polls early next year.
According to data on the South Asian terrorism portal, more than 6.370 people have been murdered in militant incidents in Manipur since 1992. In 2015 at least 20 soldiers were killed in An attack by armed individuals in the state.
