If Kohli scored for a century in the ODI series kick-off at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, he would surpass Ponting and become the captain with the most centuries in international cricket across formats.
Currently, Kohli and Ponting top the list of captains with the most centuries in international cricket (41).
If he scores a hundred goals on Tuesday (March 23), the 32-year-old would also match legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored most centuries at home in the 50-over game. Currently, Tendulkar tops the table for most centuries of an Indian batsman in home ODIs. He had smashed 20 centuries during his stint in cricket. While Kohli had so far achieved 19 tons in front of a home audience in ODIs.
In the recently completed five-game T20I series against England, Kohli put in a brilliant performance as he amassed 231 runs, including three half centuries that made him the series player.
