Virat Kohli-led Team India began 2020 on the best note by taking down Sri Lanka by gates in the second T20I at Indore’s Holkar Stadium. With the first match abandoned without a ball being bowled, India additionally took an invincible lead in the three-match series with an outstanding seven-wicket win.

Virat Kohli’s decision to bowl first was justified by his bowlers as India restricted Sri Lanka to 142 for 9. The Islanders started well with their openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Avishka Fernando, adding 38 runs for the first wicket in less than five overs.
But after the powerplay, Sri Lanka’s innings never got the spur as they kept losing wickets at regular periods. To up the scoring rate, their batsmen played some rash shots, and hence they eventually end up 142 for 9. Kusal Perera was the top-scorer for his side, racking up 34, while Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 23.
In reply, India chased out the total inside 18 overs and with seven wickets in hand. In-form KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan laid the structure for the easy chase, including 71 runs for the first wicket before the former departed for 45. Dhawan left soon after scoring up 32 before Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer added 51 runs to just about seal the win.
Talking after the game, Virat Kohli revealed his delight over the efficiency. He explained the efficiency of the bowlers, particularly Navdeep Saini, as he said that the team has gone from strength to strength.
“Very satisfied. It was a professional performance. We have gone from strength to strength. It’s an excellent sign for the team. Navdeep has come into the ODI circuit. Also, he is acquiring more self-confidence. You can seem to allow himself to go. It’s great to see getting him to take wickets with yorkers and bouncers.
“Good to see Burmah back as well. I assume one guy will certainly be a surprise plan going to Australia. Kuldeep takes the ball away, so does Washington. As a captain, you require more than 5 bowlers. Beautiful surface, we bowled perfectly well. As a bowler, no person likes bowling here. You intend to see people stepping up,” he included.
“We were 25-30 runs short, but still we tried to bowl consistent lines and lengths. The bowlers did a great job to drag the match till the 18th over. Udana he’s our leading bowler and is very experienced in this format. He got injured just before we went out to bowl. He’s recovering now. We need to give opportunities to the youngsters,” Lasith Malinga said in the post-match presentation.
Both teams will now travel to Pune to play the final T20I of the series.
