Even without the services of the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and the fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, India beat the number 1 in the world. 1 side England in the T20I series with five games on Saturday 3-2.
“They probably have more strength in depth because of the IPL and T20 cricket they play and the fact that they have just beaten England without likely three main bowlers,” Atherton told Sky Sports.
“All together and the fact that they play at home are the team to beat.”
The T20 World Championship is scheduled to take place in India in October and November this year. However, Artherton, who led England in 54 friendlies, said it wasn’t a cake for India.
“England are a very good team and the West Indies and other teams are also dangerous, but if you put the price up you would say India are favorites,” he said.
Another former English skipper, Michael Vaughan, praised India for winning the streak, saying the addition of Jadeja and Bumrah will only strengthen the team at the T20 World Cup.
“India did a great job in this series … the better team won … Add @ Jaspritbumrah93 & @imjadeja to this team in Indian conditions and they are favorites to win the T20 World Cup … Great Show to watch … #INDvsENG, “tweeted Vaughan.
India put on a dominant all-round show, beating England in the fifth T20 International with 36 runs and winning the series 3-2 with five games on Saturday.
