Indonesia. Anak Karakatu volcano eruption

The Indonesian news agency Antara reported that the eruption of the Anak Karakatu volcano, located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, began on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

According to the agency, the eruption began on January 23, but intermittently, but on Tuesday, January 24, it threw out a two-kilometer column of volcanic ash and spread over the strait.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the agency said authorities were preventing residents from approaching the volcano site more than five kilometers away to prevent unimaginable consequences from occurring.

Under the system adopted in Indonesia, the danger of a volcanic eruption was set at the third level out of four.

It should be noted that the name of the volcano “Anak Karakato” means (Child of Karakatau), because this place was for the Karakatu volcano, which collapsed after its eruption in 1883, killing more than 35,000 people. However, after a series of explosions that lasted from 1927 to 1930, a new volcano called Anak Karakatu formed at the same place, the eruption of which in 2018 claimed the lives of 429 people.
