Racism has raised its ugly head recently in the state of Iowa – and a 14-year-old girl was the unfortunate victim. According to reports, a woman from Des Moines, Iowa, deliberately crushed a teenager because she thought she was Mexican.
@NYTimes reports that Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, of Des Moines, told police that she intentionally hit the girl with her vehicle on December 9 because she believed she was “Mexican.” The episode took place in Clive, Iowa – a town of about 17,000 people about 10 miles west of Des Moines. Local authorities said the girl was walking on the sidewalk on her way to Indian Hills Junior High School when “a vehicle left the roadway and overturned the girl,” police said.
Franklin fled the scene without checking to see if the girl had been injured or injured. Unfortunately, the girl suffered a concussion and received multiple bruises following the accident which led to her being hospitalized for two days. Authorities quickly identified Franklin as the driver and charged him with attempted murder. At the time of his arrest, Franklin was already at Polk County jail on a separate assault charge which occurred on the same day as the hit and run.
On the previous assault charge, Franklin was charged with making racist comments to a West Des Moines convenience store clerk and customers, and she also allegedly threw articles at them. She is currently being held on a million dollar bail for attempted murder.
Chief Michael G. Venema said about the incident:
“There is no place in our community (or any other) for this type of hatred and violence. We are committed to supporting and supporting this family and to working diligently with them to obtain justice. “
Franklin’s next hearing will take place on December 30.
