Iraq and United Arab Emirates sign a contract to build 5 solar power plants

Today, Wednesday, the Iraqi news agency said Iraq and the UAE have signed a contract to build five solar power plants to generate electricity.

The UAE Minister of Energy arrived in Baghdad today, Wednesday, and met with his Iraqi counterpart as they discussed bilateral cooperation in the oil and energy sectors.

In June, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar”, a subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company and one of the world’s leading companies in the field of renewable energy, announced the signing of a strategic agreement with Iraq for the development of solar photovoltaic projects in the Country with a total production capacity of at least 2 gigawatts.

Iraq hopes to increase the share of renewable energy in total energy produced by the end of this decade in order to address supply problems and meet climate goals. The country that joined the Paris climate agreement of questyear has some of the highest levels of solar radiation in the region.

Iraq is implementing a plan to replace clean energy with energy produced from fossil fuels, with a rate of 20 to 25% of the energy produced, equal to 10-12 gigawatts.

Last August, the Iraqi Cabinet said Iraq had signed an agreement in principle with the Chinese Power China Company on building solar power plants with a capacity of 2,000 megawatts.

The government added in a tweet that the first phase of the project will have a capacity of 750 megawatts.

The main electricity network in Iraq experiences outages that last for hours every day throughout the year, but supply shortages are exacerbated during the hot summer months, when temperatures soar as high as 50 degrees Celsius, and families rely on air conditioners.

The Iranian Ministry of Electricity had announced the suspension of the export of electricity to Iraq, which, despite being an oil country, relies heavily on Iran in the energy field, as it imports a third of its gas needs from it. and electricity. , due to its dilapidated infrastructure which makes it unable to achieve self-sufficiency to meet the needs of its 40 million people.

Tehran asks Baghdad to pay more than $ 6 billion in arrears, which are bills owed by the Iraqi electricity ministry, which US sanctions prevent from paying any amount in dollars to Iran.
