Israel: We will sign an agreement of pace with Sudan after forming a civilian government

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen confirmed on Thursday evening that Israel and Sudan “have agreed” to work to “sign a treaty of paceafter his return from an official visit to Khartoum, the first by an Israeli foreign minister.

Signature after the formation of a civilian government

“I am pleased to inform you that as part of the visit we agreed to sign a treaty of pace between Sudan and Israel,” Cohen told reporters upon his return to Tel Aviv airport after the formation of a civilian government in Khartoum.

“The agreement of pace it will open the door for Sudan to establish strong relations with the United States,” the Israeli official added.

For its part, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry has announced its intention to proceed with the normalization of full diplomatic relations with Israel, following the visit of the Israeli Foreign Minister last Thursday to the Sudanese capital.

During his one-day visit to Khartoum, Eli Cohen met with a number of Sudanese political figures, including the head of the Sovereign Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, according to the Sudanese government news agency (SUNA).

“Forward to the normalization of relations”

The Sudanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement published after Cohen’s departure that it was agreed to move forward towards normalization of relations.

Sudan had signed a normalization deal with Israel in 2020 and joined Morocco, Bahrain and the UAE in US-brokered deals to establish full diplomatic relations. But normalization stopped with Khartoum.

“in Preparation”

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted that “something is in construction site” before going in France Thursday morning.

“We continue to expand the circle of pace’ he added, noting that Chad, on the border with Sudan, opened a new embassy on Thursday in Israel.

Netanyahu, who returned to power last December, also stated: “We will continue to expand and deepen the circle of pace with other countries, near and far”.
