James Bond: Daniel Craig’s Star Wars cameo got out of control ‘I didn’t sign up for this’

As the actor prepares to bid farewell to his most iconic role, he has been doing an unprecedented level of interviews. Perhaps keen to finally dispel the lingering impression he is a little dour and serious, Craig has been merrily sharing anecdotes and amusing stories – and not just from his time on Her Majesty’s secret service. One included that famous moment when he popped up in JJ Abrams’ relaunch of the Star Wars saga. SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE FULL SCENE

Many actors and famous faces have cameoed in the Star Wars movies, but usually anonymously, hidden under the suits and helmets. Many of them didn’t even make to the screen – including princes William and Harry – when their scenes hit the cutting room floor.

Craig, however, didn’t just make it to the finished cut, he had a uniquely impressive moment, with a storyline and a few lines of his own.

He told the full story at a special BAFTA retrospective of his career over the weekend.

Speaking to Edith Bowman, he said: “I think we were doing Spectre, and all of our crew were on Star Wars. Ben Dixon, who was our seconding (Second Assistant Director), a great lovely man Ben Dixon, he was on seconding and I kind of went to, I had to go into Pinewood to, I don’t know what I had to go to Pinewood for, to do some fitting or something.

“And I said to Ben, I said, ‘part for me?”. And he was like, ‘are you serious?’ I was like, ‘yeah.’ And he went, ‘I’ll go ask JJ’. And he came back and said, ‘yeah.’

Craig added: “Thing was, I thought ‘background stormtrooper.’ I mean, I wanted to do that guy that bumps his head in the original one, you know that person who drops his lightsaber or something.

“Then I was in a whole f***ing scene, I was like, ‘OK!’ And we did the scene and then I just thought they’ll loop me, they’ll put another voice on it, you know. Then I had to spend like three hours with JJ on a looping session like doing all the dialogues. Like, ‘really, you want me to do this? Get someone else to do this!'”

The scene happens when Rey has been captured and tied up for interrogation on a First Order ship. She attempts to use her new Force will on a stormtrooper to compel him to let her escape.

When Rey first tries, ordering him to loosen her restraints and leave, he resists and tells her, “I’ll tighten those restraints, scavenger scum.”

Once you know who it is, Craig’s voice and mannerisms are immediately recognisable.

Rey focuses the Force on him and this time he complies, repeating back, “I will loosen these restraints and leave the cell with the door open.”

In a nice flourish of the actor’s inherent sardonic wit, when she also tells him to drop his blaster, he swaggers out and drawls, “Aaaand I’ll drop my weapon,” casually tossing it aside with hilarious flair.

Craig’s talent for mischief continued when rumours started to spread he had a came in Star Wars Episode VII.

He said: “I kind of went and said, ‘no f***ing way was I in Star Wars.’ I mean, I thought I was great to kind of play around with that and everybody kind of started hating on me ’cause I sort of said I didn’t like Star Wars and I just was like, ‘oh it was so stupid.'”

Even with his face covered, the actor’s presence was spotted by everyone, including the next Star Wars director, The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson.

Craig said: “But it was amazing and I’m in the movie and Rian says when he saw the movie the first thing he did afterwards was he said, ‘who was that f***ing Storm Trooper?’ He said he knew it was somebody, whatever. It’s the way I walk, clearly.”
