James Bond: Why Daniel Craig turned down playing Thor after Marvel ‘offered Avengers role’

Back in 2011, the relatively unknown Chris Hemsworth starred as Marvel’s Asgardian god in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. The 28-year-old Aussie’s casting along with Loki star Tom Hiddleston was a huge gamble for Marvel, which has entirely paid off and made both actors huge A-list stars. But did you know that James Bond star Daniel Craig was allegedly offered the Avengers role?

Back in 2008, Craig was promoting his second Bond movie Quantum of Solace.

Speaking with IESB.net, Stephanie Sanchez asked the 007 star if he was up for trying something a bit different like Thor.

Reportedly, the Bond actor laughed this off as the journalist told him she had heard he’d been in the shortlist for Marvel’s Asgardian god.

Craig then shared that Marvel had indeed already approached him for the part but that he’d turned it down.

The Bond star jokingly said that it would be too much of a power trip for him if he played both 007 and Thor. He later said: “I have no idea about Thor. I just was having a joke.”

Whatever the case, Collider reported he was offered the role outright. Hiddleston actually auditioned for the character too before bagging Loki, with his test footage being shared online.

Other stars who screen-tested for Thor included Charlie Hunnam, Alexander Skarsgard, Joel Kinnaman, Kevin McKidd, and WWE star Triple-H.

Interestingly, Hemsworth almost entirely missed a change, having not been given a screen test early on.

Hemsworth’s brother Luke did test though and after Marvel passed on him, the Thor star’s agent asked Kevin Feige to let him read for the role again – which he did.

At the time, the Aussie was shooting Cabin in the Woods, which was written and produced by Joss Whedon, who went on to direct the first two Avengers movies.

At the time, he and director Drew Goddard gave Hemsworth advice on how to bag the role, which of course he did after nailing the callback.

Hemsworth went on to star in three Thor movies and four Avengers blockbusters.

The last time we saw the Asgardian god he was jetting off into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Both the Avenger and the team of space misfits will next feature in Taika Waititi’s Thor Love and Thunder next year.

As for Craig, well he has a new franchise with Rian Johnson’s Knives Out movies as detective Benoit Blanc.

But we wouldn’t be surprised if that now he’s done with Bond he’s open to starring in the MCU.
