The Japanese Ministry of Defense said in a declaration to the media that eight Chinese Navy ships, including an aircraft carrier, crossed the islands of Okinawa in southern Japan on Monday.

The ministry added that the ships, which include several destroyers, have sailed between the main island of Okinawa and Miyakojima. Chinese ships did not enter Japanese territorial waters. The Chinese Defense Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

The US Seventh Fleet, part of the US naval forces in the Pacific, did not respond to a request for comment.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense said it will monitor the movements of the aircraft carrier and its accompanying group, describing the situation as “normal”.

Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that this is the first time a Chinese aircraft carrier has been confirmed in the region since last December.
