Japan overthrows Australia and gives green a chance to lead

Japan eliminated an own goal in the final minutes by beating leaders Australia 2-1 in Saitama in qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.

O Tanaka brought quickly in Japan lead in the eighth minute and Edem Hrujic equalized for the visitors in the 69th minute.

It looked like the match was heading towards a draw before Aziz Behich scored an own goal with four minutes to go.

Australia’s balance sheet stopped at nine points in four games, but could lose first place in the second round if the green team, with which it is tied in draw, gets a positive result against its host China in a second moment, while Japan occupies third place and has six points.

The prime two teams from the two groups qualify directly for the Qatar 2022 finals, while the two third-placed teams meet in an Asian playoff to determine which team will compete in the global playoffs.
