Johnny Depp hits out at Disney: ‘You can’t take Jack Sparrow away from me’

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp recently appeared at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain where he made a comment about his character, Jack Sparrow. The star has infamously reportedly been dropped from the role by Disney following a public court battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard over “wife-beater” claims – a battle he lost earlier this year. Speaking about his beloved Jack Sparrow, whom he played for 14 years over five films, Depp explained he can “travel” with Sparrow anytime he wants.

Depp said at a press conference: “I suppose this is the positive side of having, in a strange way, given life to those characters like Captain Jack or whatever character that I was lucky enough to locate and bring to life the beauty of Captain Jack Sparrow.

“I’ll go to somebody’s house, man, I’ll perform at your kid’s birthday party at this point.”

He then seemingly hit out at Disney, saying: “I don’t need a company to do that. I can just do that myself and nobody can take that away.”

Depp proved this way of thinking recently when he was seen putting on his Jack Sparrow voice and mannerisms while meeting fans at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

The 58-year-old told press: “That’s the greatest pleasure of Jack Sparrow. I can travel with Captain Jack in a box.

“Literally, Captain Jack in a box, and when the opportunity is right and I’m able to go and visit people and places where the smiles and the laughs and the things that are important, the most important things in the world are on the line.”

Elsewhere in the film festival, Depp spoke out against “cancel culture” and its repercussions.

Depp said: “It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgment based on what essentially amounts to polluted air. It’s so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe.

“It takes one sentence and there’s no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. It’s not just me that this has happened to, it’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men. Sadly at a certain point, they begin to think that it’s normal. Or that it’s them. When it’s not.”

Depp’s future in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been left a mystery for now, but the future of the series itself has a lot going for it.

At the moment, there are at least two new movies in development at Disney.

One Pirates project will be a female-focused film starring Margot Robbie as a new protagonist, penned by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson.

Robbie, star of The Suicide Squad, recently confirmed the new movie will be “full of girl power” for the first time in the series’ history.

What’s more, last year the Pirates of the Caribbean executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed a new film in the series is on the way, but may not include Depp.

He said: “We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it. We don’t know. We’ve been working on it for a little bit.”

Bruckheimer added: “The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be. So, we’re going to have to see.”

Rumours also hit earlier this month that a third new Pirates film is being developed “for Disney Plus”.

Giant Freakin Robot reported this third potential film also does not star Johnny Depp.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.
