Joint military exercises between Russia and Belarus on “urban warfare”

Belarus’ Defense Ministry said on Sunday that Moscow and Minsk will conduct joint flying exercises for air teams that are part of a regional grouping of the two countries’ forces starting next week.

The ministry said in a statement that the exercises will continue from January 16 to February 1.

According to the statement, the Russian Air Force has arrived in Belarus today, Sunday. The ministry said the exercises would include all airfields and training areas of the air force and air defense in Belarus.

According to the Belarusian Defense Ministry’s “VoenTV” channel, “the regional forces (joint between Russia and Belarus) are conducting exercises almost without interruption”.

The channel added, “The intensity of the drills is in constant increase. The goal is to prepare to respond to the aggressor on all fronts,” noting that a special emphasis is placed on urban warfare in the exercises.

In context, the channel talked about taking advantage of Moscow’s experience in the fighting during the exercises in Ukraine and how to deal with “situations in which the enemy sets up platforms of fire in various buildings within the cities”.

And last October, Belarus announced the creation of joint regional forces with Russia, which have been joined by thousands of Russian recruits. The deployment of Russian soldiers in Belarus has raised fears that Belarusian forces will join the assault in course against Ukraine.

Russian forces used Belarus as a launching point for their attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, in February 2022, and military cooperation between Moscow and Minsk has increased in recent months.

Minsk insists it does not participate in the Ukrainian conflict and will participate only if its security is threatened by Ukraine or its Western allies.

And last December, Belarus issued a decision temporarily restricting access to parts of the “Gomel” region in the southeast, bordering Ukraine and Russia.

The Belarusian government stated on its website web which “will temporarily restrict access, temporary residence and movement within thearea border within Lovsky, Brazhinsky and Khoyniki in Gomel”.

The government has not explained how long these restrictions will last, but said its decision will not apply to officials, workers and residents. in those areas.
