KAPSARC concludes its participation in (COP27) as an independent observer of the climate negotiations at the conference

The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) concluded its participation in the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, where it participated as an independent observer in the climate negotiations that took place at the conference, a as well as its participation during the global event days with various events and activities.

During his participation, he held four workshops in collaboration with international and local bodies, participated in the second edition of the Saudi Green Initiative, and enriched 6 discussion sessions held in the Saudi pavilion participating in the exhibition, and 6 other sessions in international pavilions such as the Japan pavilion, the International Emissions Trading Association, the Clean Air Task Force and climate sessions held by the New York Times.

The head of the center, Fahd Al-Ajlan, explained that the center’s participation in this session of the conference comes to support global efforts in tackling climate change and to clarify the efforts made by Saudi Arabia in this field. , the center launched the second carbon circular economy indicator and two joint reports with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, to demonstrate the role of nature-based solutions and the circular carbon economy in reducing carbon emissions and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement programme.

Al-Ajlan explained that the event, with its various activities, provided an opportunity to exchange expertise and experience and to learn about applicable best practice practices that aim to achieve secure and sustainable energy without affecting the development cycle economic, and an opportunity for the center to present and clarify the circular carbon economy approach it has developed in collaboration with a group of international bodies as a global and integrated approach to manage carbon emissions.

For his part, Dr. Fahad Al-Turki, KAPSARC’s Vice President for Knowledge and Analysis, explained that many countries have set goals to achieve neutrality zero by 2060 and that these sessions, included in the Climate Summit, pave the way for achieving this goal by clarifying the best initiatives and ways to transform this goal in reality, and investing in energy efficiency will increase the opportunity to balance the energy transition with economic development challenges.

Interestingly, 15 experts from the Center’s researchers participated in many discussions during the conference days, such as the role of nature-based solutions in achieving net emissions zerothe best innovative solutions in the recycling of plastic waste, the opportunities to preserve and improve the biodiversity of the ecosystem and the challenges of the green transition in Middle East, in addition to the Kingdom’s approach to achieve neutrality zerolocal carbon sequestration strategies and the role of financing in promoting carbon storage and sequestration mechanisms.

KAPSARC is an advisory research center that seeks to provide the best insights and advice and conduct scientific and applied research aimed at developing the energy system in the Kingdom and participating in global decision-making.
