She said that Piers used tough love as a method to help her through the heartbreaking time, especially when Derek was in a coma for months.

Kate said that her long-time friend would say to her: “You have to fight this. Do not crumble.”

Speaking about the toughest year of her life, Kate said: “When Piers rang he did what the Piers I’ve known for 20 years always did, and went into Churchillian rallying mode.

“‘Right, Kate, get a grip. You’re a brilliant journalist. Do what you do best . . . get on this. Get to the bottom of the situation.”

Derek was placed in an induced coma last year after he contracted coronavirus and was released from hospital this April to be at home with Kate and their children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11.

Kate said Piers helped her tremendously during that time as he “spurred” her on.

The 54-year-old revealed her husband is still suffering the after-effects of the virus, after previously being warned he still has a long way to go in his recovery

It comes as Kate revealed she has had the same EDMR therapy Prince Harry has had, after the royal documented a session in his new mental health documentary.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the star said she also had the therapy, which provides bilateral stimulation by tapping the hands or moving eyes rapidly, to help overcome the effects of psychological trauma.

Explaining the therapy, Kate said: “It’s called Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing, a bit of a mouthful, I have actually had a little bit of this.

“It’s not a million miles away from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, processes like this.

“Less to do with therapy where you talk about your childhood, it’s more practical.”
