Kate Garraway’s husband Derek ‘returns home' after over a year in hospital battling Covid

Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper, 53, is reportedly finally back home after more than a year in hospital battling long Covid. It has been said Derek has been taken off all machines, but will be cared for at the family’s property in North London.

A friend said: “Kate’s dreamt of this day for so long, and can’t thank wonderful NHS staff enough.”

Despite the breakthrough, the Good Morning Britain host’s family has been warned that Derek still faces a “long and gruelling” health battle.

Although Derek reportedly has a long way to go due to his condition, Kate, 53, daughter Darcey, 15, and son Billy, 11, are “thrilled” that doctors have given him the go ahead to leave intensive care.

The family friend said: “The children, who have been so remarkably resilient, have been so, so happy to have their dad home.

The film showed that due to Covid regulations, Kate, the kids, and Derek’s elderly parents have not been allowed to visit him very frequently in hospital.

Kate was also filmed planning for Derek’s eventual return home and she was seen making some renovations to the ground-floor of their house in preparation.

The tiles she chose for her husband’s wet room were “pure Derek — like something out of Poirot”, but left their 14-year-old daughter Darcey “mortified”.

“Darcey was, like, ‘Please! Why do we have to have these old-fashioned tastes?’” Kate recalled as she spoke to The Times.

“I had to explain, ‘I think he would like them, let’s do something he would like.’ Because if he’s lucky enough to come back, I do know he’s going to be furious with how messy his study is.”
