King Charles Coronation Sparks Controversy and Turmoil over Allegedly Obscene Ceremony
The coronation of King Charles on Saturday, May 6, will cost £100 million.
Munroe Bergdorf, a model, and activist, said she doesn’t understand why King Charles “ride[s] around in his golden carriage” when the cost of living is so high in the UK.
Bergdorf, a contributing editor for Vogue, posted a long statement on Instagram on May 3 expressing her “disgust” with the historic event.
The model criticized the event’s “opulence” two days before the King was crowned because the economy was in bad shape.
“Whether you’re for or against monarchy, I don’t understand how someone could support such an obscene display of wealth and power in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, national worker strikes, rising inflation, rising poverty, and rising food bank usage,” the 35-year-old wrote.
She said the royal event was “out of touch” with everyday life in the UK.
The coronation service’s controversial “homage to the people” part has been cut back.
After people complained, they were asked to swear loyalty to the King at his coronation on Saturday.
Critics said that the change would cause division, but Charles reportedly agreed with the change.
The King’s official biographer Jonathan Dimbleby said the People’s homage would be “abhorrent” to Charles.
Instead of “calling” for loyalty to the King, Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, will “invite” the congregation to support him.
In the original announcement, Lambeth Palace said, “I swear that I will be loyal to Your Majesty and your heirs and successors according to the law. “God help me.”
Many people laughed at the idea of a people’s loyalty oath because they thought it was feudal. The Republican campaign group said the idea was “offensive and tone-deaf” and showed that the government didn’t care about the people.
The big day starts when workers sweep sand off the roads, the police arrive, and a rain shelter is set up outside the entrance to the abbey. On Saturday morning, the military and Metropolitan Police patrolled the area from Victoria to Westminster.
After 4:30 a.m., royal fans with Union flags and crowns could be seen on trains and in Tube stations.
Welby will do the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, which has been going on for hundreds of years.
On the day before the coronation, the senior cleric said the ceremony would be “a powerful reflection and celebration of who we are today, in all our wonderful diversity.”
He hoped the service would give people “ancient wisdom and new hope” and impress them with its “majesty and sacred wonder.”
The Duke of Sussex, Charles’s estranged son, will likely show up. About 100 heads of state, kings and queens, celebrities, everyday heroes, and family and friends of the couple will be there.
David and Victoria Beckham, Lionel Richie, Emmanuel Macron, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Rishi Sunak, and Jill Biden will go without their husbands.
“The homage of the people was always an invitation rather than an expectation,” a Lambeth Palace spokesperson said about the changes.
Buckingham Palace and Lambeth Palace agreed to change the first words to clarify the service order.
Collaboration has been used to plan the coronation.
“We are eagerly awaiting the service.”
