Kingdom provides $ 10 million to help tackle potential threats to oil tanker “Safer”

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center announced that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has provided US $ 10 million to help address the existing threat of the “Safer” oil tanker anchored on the Red Sea coast north of the Yemeni city of Hodeidah.

In a press release today, the Center said the Kingdom has always supported the efforts of the United Nations to address and avoid potential economic, humanitarian and environmental threats to the “Safer” oil tanker and the repercussions of the oil spill from it, which could cause a major environmental and shipping disaster that threatens the Red Sea coast, fishing communities, international shipping, and the entry of food and fuel and life-saving supplies to Yemen, which will aggravate the humanitarian situation and threaten countries that overlook the Red Sea, pointing out that the Kingdom has warned in more than one occasion that if oil, which contains more than a million barrels and has not been maintained since 2015, will come out of the “Safer” tanker, the world will witness the greatest environmental disaster that threatens life, fishing and biodiversity following the oil spill.

He said: “During the commemoration of the United Nations World Oceans Day, June 8, 2022, the need for collective action to protect the oceans was highlighted, as the oceans are a major source of food and the greatest ally in in the face of climate change, and the Kingdom is following international developments in this regard in the context of concern for the conservation of marine resources and the most important ecosystems.

In the interest of the Kingdom, represented by the King Salman Center for Relief, to stabilize Yemen and support international efforts to develop solutions to everything that threatens it pace and international security, numerous meetings and discussions have been held with the international community in this regard to reach the need to support the Safer tanker rescue plan, and in a continuation of previous support provided for the maintenance of this tanker. And in support of the efforts of United Nations organizations to find the appropriate plan to neutralize the potential danger of this tanker, the Kingdom today provided an amount of 10 million dollars USA and the Kingdom calls on the United Nations to swiftly take the necessary measures to ensure the prevention of oil spills and transfer it in a safe place or benefit from it for the benefit of the Yemeni people’s brotherhood, and also calls on the international community to contribute to the urgent need to support this initiative and prevent a major environmental catastrophe.
