Korea is more isolated than ever . It fears American “recklessness” in Taiwan

Ojea Quintana, the UN investigator on North Korea, said she is more isolated than ever from the international community, due to her hard steps to prevent coronavirus.

Quintana told the UN Human Rights Committee that the breakdown of relations between North Korea and the rest of the world has had “a significant impact on the human rights of people within the country.”

He explained that North Koreans are facing food shortages and a collapse in their livelihoods, noting that the most vulnerable citizens, children and the elderly, are at risk of starving. He added that he was also “very concerned” about the extent of hunger in political prison camps.

North Korea has closed its borders to prevent a pandemic, a measure that Quintana says would have a “devastating effect” on people’s right to health because the country’s health infrastructure suffers from underinvestment and severe shortages of supplies.

“It has been said that the tough steps taken by the North Korean government to prevent the entry of COVID-19 include the policy of shooting individuals trying to enter or leave the country,” he added.

He also said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has recognized the “sad” food situation and is investing in efforts to prevent hunger in the country.

Korea’s support for China over Taiwan

In another context, North Korea on Saturday accused the administration of US President Joe Biden of increasing military tensions with China through its “reckless” support for Taiwan and said the increased military presence of the United States in the region poses a potential threat to North Korea.

In the comments broadcast by media state, North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Pak Myung Ho criticized the United States for sending warships across the Taiwan Strait, providing Taiwan with advanced weapons systems and conducting military exercises there.

He found that the United States’ “reckless meddling” in Taiwan-related matters, which Pyongyang views as a wholly internal China affair, threatens to create a “delicate situation on the Korean peninsula”.

“It is well known that US forces and their military bases in (South Korea) are used to put pressure on China and that the huge forces of the United States and dependent countries, which are stationed near Taiwan, can conduct a military operation against North Korea, “Park said.

Park’s statement came the day after President Joe Biden said at a CNN event that the United States was busy defending Taiwan if it was attacked by China.

While this appears to be a departure from Washington’s longstanding stance of maintaining “strategic ambiguity” as to whether it would intervene if China attacked Taiwan, White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said Biden had no intention of changing the policy of the Chinese. United States.

North Korea is increasingly critical of the broader US security role in the Asia-Pacific region in intense competition with China, Pyongyang’s main ally and economic lifeline.

Earlier last month, North Korea threatened unspecified countermeasures in the wake of the Biden administration’s decision to supply Australia with nuclear-powered submarines.
