Las Vegas Raiders: Why (and when) the Auckland NFL team is leaving for a new stage

The late afternoon Raiders afternoon game against the Jaguars in Week 15 of the regular season 2019 marks the last NFL game Oakland will host. Of course, we said the same thing towards the end of the season last year.

Yes, the Raiders are scheduled to move to Las Vegas in 2020 and play next season’s home games at Allegiant Stadium, a 1.75 million-square-foot space built right next to the Vegas strip. But the team’s lease to the Coliseum of Oakland-Alameda, which it left after a season under a federal antitrust lawsuit, had to be renewed for 2019. The Raiders were looking for a temporary home ahead of their move to Las Vegas 2020, and team owner Mark Davis settled on a deal to stay in Oakland for another season.

MOCK DRAFT 2020: Raiders go on defense with Vegas first choice

So let’s clear up. We think Week 15’s game against the Jags is the last Raiders game in Oakland. In addition, the lease of the rafters with the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum definitely includes a year of choice for 2020 if the Allegiant Stadium does not end in time.

This is disputed. By all accounts, progress at the new Raiders stage in Las Vegas is steady. Prior to this move, below is a refresh of why raiders move from Oakland to Las Vegas.

When do the Raiders start playing in Las Vegas?

The Raiders are scheduled to start playing at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas next season.

With that said, the target date for the completion of the new stadium is July 31, just two weeks before the NFL typically schedules the first week of preseason games. Any construction failure could affect the NFL’s debut. However, in December, a report on the state of the Las Vegas Stadium reported that there were no delays in construction.

When the Raiders play their first game in Las Vegas, it won’t be the first NFL event the city will host in 2020. The NFL draft is scheduled to take place April 24-25 around Las Vegas.

Why are the Raiders moving to Las Vegas?

This is a long story, so let’s make a long story short.

  1. The Raiders needed a new stage in Oakland.
  2. Auckland failed to propose a satisfactory stadium solution.
  3. The Raiders tried to move to Los Angeles.
  4. The NFL said no to the LA move and gave Oakland the last chance.
  5. The NFL didn’t like Oakland’s proposal again.
  6. The NFL made the Las Vegas proposal.

Below is the larger version, an explanation released by the NFL days after the announcement of the Raiders’ relocation in March 2017.

“On March 27, 2017, League membership considered a request from the Oakland Raiders to relocate the club’s territory to Las Vegas, where the club would play in a new stadium built through a public-private partnership.

In accordance with the Association’s Policy and Procedures on Proposed Franchise Movements (“Guidelines”), the application was reviewed by the NFL Finance and Stage Committees. Prior to meeting members to consider the application, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a report identifying factors in the guidelines as relevant to the evaluation of proposed franchise relocations by club members.

“The Commissioner and his membership said in 2016, as part of the Raiders’ request to move to Los Angeles, that today’s Raiders stadium is not enough for NFL football and should be replaced, the independence of party leaders in Auckland, despite the clubs’ established preference to continue serving existing fans and communities, the club members concluded that raiders should be allowed to move away from Auckland. i from the club’s current lease of relocation to another community.

“For more than a decade, the Raiders have worked diligently and in good faith to improve the situation in Oakland. The NFL has decided not to accept relocation requests before the 2015 season, and the Raiders are not allowed to move to Los Angeles before since the 2016 season. This has given the Oakland Leader extra time to address the Raiders’ stadium-recognized issues. The NFL has stressed that member clubs are unlikely to accept any possible or uncertain stadium proposals as a basis for requiring a club that otherwise qualifies for relocation to stay on the domestic market. Proposals for the stadium he received from Auckland depend on various contingencies and entail a series of significant uncertainties that the conclusion of members cannot be resolved within a reasonable time. This is true even if the Association has long accepted the community’s position that it will not invest public funds in the construction of the land.

“The move to Las Vegas includes a well-defined and well-funded proposal for a first-rate stage in a diverse and growing community that is well recognized as an entertainment destination and offers raiders a real chance to work out the long-term and expected to offer the body valuable future prospects.

“Upon thorough examination, membership approved the relocation of the Raiders’ territory to Las Vegas.”

Of the 32 NFL team owners, Stephen Ross of the Dolphins was the only one to vote against the Raiders’ move to Las Vegas.

“We as owners and as a league owe it to the fans to do what we can to stay in the communities that have supported us until all options are exhausted,” Ross said.

Raiders Stadium in Las Vegas

In August, the Raiders and Allegiant announced an agreement to name rights to the Las Vegas Stadium, now known as the Allegiant Stadium, which will also serve as the home of UNLV football.

According to The Mercury News, the $ 750 million in public money Davis received in Las Vegas is the most ever offered for the construction of a professional sports court. In total, the cost of the new, $ 62,228-seat dome stadium (expandable to 72,000) in Las Vegas is a reported $ 1.9 billion.

As one can imagine, it is very nice.

Last year, the Las Vegas Review Magazine highlighted some of the features of the new stadium. They include:

  • High durability, translucent, polymer ceiling that allows for natural light but keeps heat down during the summer.
  • The translucent elements of the stadium will make the court appear black during the day, but the lights inside will be visible at night.
  • The ribbon structure along the sides will vent the fresh air, free the exhaust and drain the water from the roof.
  • The lawn will grow outdoors on a 4-foot-high tray for toy caravans. (The artificial turf area will rest above the stadium floor.)

In June, the Raiders shared a time period of the first 19 months of stadium construction, which began in November 2017. (There is also a live camera on the stadium as it is being built.)

Below is the team’s latest update on progress.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which cited a team spokesman who confirmed the pricing, Raiders fans interested in team licenses at Allegiant Stadium will have to pay between $ 20,000 and $ 75,000 each. . That means the franchise could “generate at least $ 160 million in revenue based on an estimated 8,000 seats and VVIP club seats available” during the starting period, according to the price list obtained by Review Magazine.
