The expert notes in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper that a diet containing a large amount of carbohydrates is most harmful to the liver. Among the products most dangerous for the liver: sweets, excessive consumption of fruits, cereals and bread.
“Viral hepatitis B and C cause irreversible damage to the liver, as well as poisoning with any toxic substances. If we exclude poisoning and viral hepatitis, then there are still foods that can harm the liver, ”she says.
According to her, there is not one harmful substance, but a group of foods containing a large number of calories that can lead to fatty liver disease.
“First of all, sugar in all its forms is dangerous for the liver: both sweets and excessive consumption of fruits, because it contains fructose, which accelerates the development of fatty liver,” she says. Fats, salt and carbohydrates such as french fries, pasta and pilaf, as well as excessive consumption of cereals and bread, damage the liver.
And she added that following a high-calorie diet leads to an increase in carbohydrates in the body, which turns into a drop of fat in the center of the liver, which develops later and increases in size, so that it can cause liver cells. to rupture, which leads to an increase in the secretion of hepatic enzymes AST, ALT, GGT.
She says: “This is due to the death of liver cells, which in normal cases can die due to high-calorie foods. This condition can be diagnosed by examining the liver using ultrasound. As a rule, foods containing a large number of calories lead to obesity, which is the worst enemy of the liver.
The expert notes that usually the liver is damaged not by certain foods, but by obesity resulting from the excessive consumption of these foods.
She adds that many believe that cirrhosis of the liver is caused by excessive alcohol consumption. “Yes, that’s true, but it often affects people who don’t have jobs, families, goals, or aspirations, so they can only drink denatured alcohol, which can lead to alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver,” she says.
She adds, and it’s strange that this disease is usually diagnosed in men and women who do not drink alcohol at all, but eat excessively. This means that carbohydrate-rich foods pose the greatest risk of liver damage.
