Lee Moder, Co-Creator of Stargirl, Passes Away

Legendary comic book artist Lee Moder died.

Moder, 53, died on January 15, 2023, according to ComicBook. Death reason unknown.

Moder and Johns created Courtney Whitmore in 1999’s Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #0. Wonder Woman, Batman: The Last Angel, and Legion of Superheroes were his DC projects. He worked on Marvel’s X-Force, Dragon Prince, Highlander, and others.

In 2011, Image Comics published Moder and Dragon Prince writer Ron Marz’s Japanese vampire epic Shinku. “Ron calls me up one night a couple of years ago and asks me if I’d like to get in on a new idea for a book about vampires in Japan,” Moder told CBR shortly after Shinku #1’s release. “I hadn’t heard of vampires or Japan when considering a cool comic book. I anticipated novelty. We started with Shinku’s appearance and the book’s tone.”

Lee Moder’s death “lost the industry a wonderful talent,” Johns said. “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. introduced Stargirl, Courtney Whitmore. Lee created Courtney, S.T.R.I.P.E. Like his art, he was strong, beautiful, and funny. Fun! Lee left.”

“Numb,” Marz said. “Storytellers don’t end like this. Lee was more than a collaborator. He drew with my kids at home. His work was lively. Our projects were blessings but just the start. Lee had many sketchbooks with original characters, concepts, and storylines. Despite his dissatisfaction, he drew entire issues. Lee’s legacy should include that. Lovely. Lee created endlessly. His absence is unimaginable.”
