Left-wing Lula was elected president of Brazil by a hair compared to Bolsonaro

Former left-wing president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva (2003-2010) was elected president of Brazil on Sunday, narrowly defeating his opponent, outgoing far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, from 50.83% to 49.17 %, according to the semifinal official results.

Lula, a 77-year-old icon of the left, had served a prison sentence for corruption (2018-2019) before the judiciary ordered his release.

Lula returns to power in the wake of a deeply polarized election campaign.

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Lula on the victory, saying that his election “opens a new page in the history of Brazil”.

“Together we will join our efforts to address the many common challenges and renew the bonds of friendship between our two countries,” Macron wrote on Twitter, minutes after the announcement of the Brazilian presidential election results.

The election campaign was anything but “very wise”. Bolsonaro cursed Lula, calling him a “liar”, a “former prisoner”, an “alcoholic” and a “source of national shame”, to whom questhe replied that his rival was a “child violator”, a “cannibal” and a “genocide”. and a “little dictator”.

During the campaign, i social mediathe only source of information for most of its 170 million Brazilian users, have spread an unprecedented amount of false information.

As part of this campaign, the real concerns of the Brazilian people were overlooked, in particularly inflation, unemployment, poverty and hunger, which afflict 33 million Brazilians.

The main challenge in the period between the two elections was the attempt to attract 32 million people who abstained from voting in the first round (21%).

Bolsonaro, 67, held some hope after his unexpected result in the first round of elections on 2 October, with 43% of the vote against 48% of his rival.

Lula will also have to contend with a more right-wing parliament after the legislative elections of 2 October, which saw a strong representation of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party.
