Lithuania seeks to disconnect from the Russian electricity grid by 2024

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nosida said on Monday that his country is seeking to disconnect from the Russian electricity grid in 2024, a year ahead of schedule.

The electrical networks in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, which are members of the European Union, operate in harmony with the electricity grid in Russia and Belarus and depend on Russia to ensure stable energy supplies.

A project worth 1.6 billion euros (1.94 billion dollars) funded by the European Union aims to separate the Baltic states from Russia and Belarus in 2025 and connect them to the continent’s decentralized electricity system.

“We leave no chance for the attacker to use energy as a tool of political fraud … The fastest possible connection to the European electricity grid will increase the energy security of the Baltic states and the EU as a whole,” Noseda said. affirmed in a statement after meeting with the European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simpson in Vilnius.

A submarine link between Poland and Lithuania and the development of their power grids must be completed before the grid separation inherited from the former Soviet Union.
