Loki follows the Asgardian superhero as he tries to stop himself being deleted from time itself. As he works along with the TVA (the Time Variance Authority) there is still one massive question about how he has turned up in this position.
How is Loki alive?
Fans will remember the horrific moment when Thanos killed Loki in Avengers: Infinity War.
This happened at the start of the film, when, after the events of Thor: Ragnarok, Thanos and his lieutenants board the spaceship carrying the Asgardian survivors.
They are there to find the Space Stone, which is contained in the Tesseract, a blue cube Loki has kept close to him for a long time, even putting into his spear in order to beat those who try to challenge his power.

Members of the TVA in Loki
Thanos subdues The Hulk and Thor, and kills Loki and Heimdall, having sent The Hulk to Earth using the Bifröst.
This was a particularly devastating moment, as Thor watched his brother die, and many of those he held dear on the ship.
Over the course of the various MCU movies, Thor and Loki’s relationship had changed a few times, going from hating one another to a mutual respect, and by the time of Loki’s death, they even seemed to care for one another.
All of this makes his arrival in Loki confusing, and even the show’s existence at all a somewhat strange concept.
However, Avengers: Endgame provided the way for Loki to return.
Loki and Mobius M. Mobius
Before the New York Battle of 2012, as shown in The Avengers, or Avengers: Assemble, Loki is captured after trying to force humans to be subservient to him as their leader.
At this time, Loki was also using the Tesseract for his power, and had many tricks up his sleeve as to how he would defeat The Avengers.
A new version of these events were shown in Endgame, as Ant-Man and the rest of the Avengers went back into different points of their timelines to retrieve the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos.
In the Endgame version of this moment, Ant-Man makes an error which means the Tesseract falls from a suitcase and rolls towards Loki, who takes his opportunity to escape and grabs it.
Tom Hiddleston plays Loki
As a result, the Loki we are seeing in the TV series Loki is, in fact, the 2012 Loki, rather than the one who continued on and died at the hands of Thanos.
The 2012 Loki is different to the one who died in 2018, as he is still fixated with world dominion and has a continued hatred for his brother, Thor.
While it is not certain, it is likely Loki’s attempt at escape using the Space Stone backfired because the stones were destroyed in Avengers: Endgame, meaning he has ended up in an alternate universe.
This is why he comes into contact with the TVA, who give him an ultimatum: help them fix the timeline, otherwise risk being deleted from time itself.
Loki will see him go through various timelines and some important moments of history in order to help the TVA, but we will also see him up to his old tricks as he, according to the trailer, launches a campaign to become a leader once again, surrounded by minions.
Of course, now this version of Loki exists, many fans would be excited at the prospect of him turning up in the upcoming Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder.
However, this is not the case, as Tom told Empire: “We talked about the Thor movies as a family saga, and the diametric opposition between Thor and Loki and duality and antagonism being a book that perhaps should remain closed for the moment.
“We have explored about as much as we can about these two brothers.”
However, it may be they return together through the multiverse which will be explored in upcoming MCU movies.
The first episode of Loki is on Disney Plus now
