Macron: Russia’s attack on Ukraine underlines the importance of NATO’s existence

French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that the Russian attack on Ukraine underscores the importance of NATO’s existence.

At a press conference he said that the Russian operation has begun in Ukrainian territory at the end of last February, is a wake-up call for NATO.

“I will speak with the Russian and Ukrainian presidents in the next few hours,” he added.

These statements came after NATO confirmed it was working to prevent escalation in Ukraine, while stressing that sanctions had severely affected the Russian war machine.
