Thousands of residents of the Gao and Menaka regions in northeastern Mali have been forced to leave their homes in fear of the advance of the terrorist organization “ISIS” in the Greater Sahara, which is carrying out a violent attack in the region with rival local armed groups and terrorist organizations.
Menaka and Gao witnessed the clashes between the Tuareg in independence seekers and the Malian army between 2012 and 2015, and currently bear the brunt of the struggle between the Islamic State and a variety of armed groups.
The United Nations and non-governmental organizations have reported repeated attacks by ISIS against village residents accused of supporting anti-ISIS forces or refusing to provide support to its fighters.
