What Happens in 2023’s Thor Annual #1?

Marvel is giving M.O.D.O.K. a godly upgrade to fight the God of Thunder in Thor Annual #1. Revealed on writer Jackson Lanzing’s Twitter account, M.O.D.O.K. is embracing an all-new, cosmic look as he prepares to fight the God of Thunder in the upcoming issue.

Marvel first revealed the God of Thunder would be facing a deadly version of M.O.D.O.K. in 2023’s Thor Annual #1 in April 2023. Releasing in July 2023, the issue is written by Lanzing and Collin Kelly and illustrated by Ibraim Roberson. The synopsis reads, “Enter…MYTHOS! When M.O.D.O.K. – fueled by revenge and a refusal to ever again be someone else’s pawn – seizes control of all of the Ten Realms but Asgard, Thor the All-Father must step in and regain control of the Ten Realms and the World Tree. But M.O.D.O.K.’s new, cosmic power proves to be a greater threat than Thor could imagine, and he’ll need the inspiration of some beloved friends from Midgard to reclaim his realms and his awesome power.”

“Collin and I are wildly honored to contribute to the glorious legacy of THOR!” Lanzing said. “Annuals are a wonderful way to dig into a unique aspect of a character – so we’re taking Thor through a gauntlet of epic proportions to finally face down the self-doubt that plagues the new All-Father of Asgard. Does he truly deserve his throne? Or do the Nine Realms belong to he who can take them with ingenuity, intelligence, and tireless effort? Is Thor truly worthy… or does the future belong to MYTHOS?”

Thor Annual #1 will also include a preview of Thor’s new era. Announced in May 2023, writer Al Ewing and illustrated by Martín Cóccolo, a brand-new Immortal Thor series is launching in Aug. 2023. “The Gods know him as Asgard’s King, keeper of Mjolnir, hero of the tales,” Marvel previously teased. “When injustice grips the Earth and ancient powers bring down the sky, he fights for those who cannot—and when the tale is done, we will know what that cost him. This is the story of THE IMMORTAL THOR.”

Thor Annual #1 features cover art by Adam Kubert. The issue releases on July 5, 2023, from Marvel.
