Marvel’s Pet Avengers team up to battle Kraven the Hunter in new limited series

This August, Marvel’s Pet Avengers re-assemble to battle infamous Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter.

Marvel Comics has officially announced the aptly-titled Marvel Unleashed, a new four-part limited series from writer Kyle Starks and artist Jesús Hervás set to launch on Aug. 23. The series centers on Kraven kidnapping Lockjaw, the leader of the Pet Avengers. In turn, it’s up to Throg the Frog of Thunder, Redwing the Falcon, Chewie the Cat Flerken, Lucky the Pizza Dog, Bats the Ghost Dog and “their scrappy new ally” D-Dog to make the save (and potentially unearth a larger conspiracy in the process). Marvel Unleashed #1 features a main cover by David Baldeón, Bernard Chang, Adam Kubert, Chrissie Zullo and Ron Lim.

Who Are Marvel’s Pet Avengers?

Created by Chris Eliopoulos and Ig Guara, the Pet Avengers were initially introduced in the 2009 four-part limited series Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers, which takes place in Marvel’s Earth-97161 continuity. The original lineup consisted of the Inhuman dog Lockjaw, the amphibious Thor variant Throg, Speedball’s cat Hairball, Aunt May’s dog Ms. Lion, Kitty Pryde’s dragon-like alien Lockheed, Ka-Zar’s saber-tooth tiger Zabu and Falcon’s bird Redwing. (Redwing is a literal Falcon in Earth-616, but a red parrot in Earth-97161.)

Earth-97161’s Pet Avengers returned in a number of other comics — namely, the 2009-2010 five-part anthology series Tails of the Pet Avengers, the 2010 four-part limited series Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers Unleashed and the 2010-2011 four-part series Avengers vs. Pet Avengers. The Pet Avengers were eventually confirmed to be canon to Marvel’s main Earth-616 continuity in 2021’s Thor #18. Earth-616’s Pet Avengers lineup consists of Throg, Lockjaw, Lockheed, Doctor Strange’s dog Bats and Odin’s ravens Huginn and Muninn.

New Pet Avengers Lineup

The upcoming Marvel Unleashed once again shakes up the Pet Avengers’ roster. This time around, established members Lockjaw, Throg, Redwing (as a falcon) and Bats are joined by Hawkeye’s pizza-loving dog Lucky and Captain Marvel’s cat/flerken Chewbacca (aka Chewie). Then, there’s D-Dog, a brand-new addition to Marvel’s cast of characters.
