McLaren Welcomes Back Rivian Automotive’s Chief Engineer

Charles Sanderson, chief engineer at EV startup Rivian, is leaving the company to return to supercar maker McLaren, where he previously served as head of software development. He will assume the role of chief technical officer and will lead McLaren Automotive’s new technology roadmap and product innovation strategy. Sanderson originally joined Rivian in 2018 as vice president of vehicle integration and development before being promoted to chief engineer in 2019. The company has recently experienced a series of executive departures in the last seven months, including its general counsel, chief lobbyist and senior strategy director, as well as two rounds of layoffs. The company has also struggled with manufacturing issues at its plant in Illinois and has forecast output of about 50,000 vehicles this year.
