Medvedev: Moscow will do everything possible to prevent a world war and a nuclear catastrophe

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that his country would do everything possible to prevent a third world war and a nuclear catastrophe.

Sputnik quoted Medvedev as confirming the goals of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, in course since the end of February, “they will be achieved”.

The deputy head of the Russian Security Council added that his country will do everything possible to ensure that the current regime does not exist in Kiev.

Medvedev has indicated that the tension will continue “indefinitely” if Russia does not obtain adequate security guarantees.

Medvedev said that “the only thing stopping our enemies today is the knowledge that Russia will be guided by the fundamentals of state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence. If a real threat appears, it will work to solve it.”

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday that his country is ready to negotiate with all parties involved in the Ukrainian conflict.

He added in an interview on state television: “I think we are moving in the right direction. We are defending our national interests and the interests of our citizens and our people… We have no choice but to protect our citizens.” as reported by the news agency “Reuters”.

He continued: “We are ready to negotiate with all interested parties on acceptable solutions, but it depends on them. It is not we who refuse to negotiate, it is they who refuse it.”

Putin said he was “100 percent” confident in the Russian military’s ability to “destroy” the Patriot air defense system that the United States would supply to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian presidency responded to Putin’s statement, saying that Russia does not want negotiations and is shirking its responsibilities.
