Merkel’s party ends its term with a major setback… the worst loss in the elections

The Social Democratic Party won the parliamentary elections in Germany, marking the end of the reign of the powerful Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The party received 25.7% of the vote, just ahead of the Conservatives, according to official preliminary results announced by the Federal Electoral Commission on Monday.

Worst result

While the Conservative camp received 24.1% of the vote, the worst result in its history, while the Green Party came in third with 14.8%, followed by the Liberal Democratic Party with 11.5%.

The Social Democratic candidate, Olaf Schulz, had announced in previously that the Germans wanted a change and they wanted the SPD candidate to be the next chancellor.

The end of the Merkel era

Interestingly, this setback casts a shadow over the end of the Merkel era, whose popularity has remained at its peak after four terms, but has demonstrated her inability to prepare for her succession.

It could also push Christian Democracy in the face of internal unrest and a complex Merkel succession.

Interestingly, despite the Social Democrat’s narrow victory, he will have to form a three-party coalition, a precedent in contemporary German history.
