Minecraft for PS4 is finally being played cross-platform
Starting Dec. 10, the PlayStation 4 release of Minecraft will enable cross-platform gaming. This means players can now interact in the same online world on all major gaming platforms – Nintendo Switch, Windows, Xbox One, iOS and Android, and Gear VR devices.
After generations of exclusivity, standard cross-platform gaming in modern video games is a relatively new concept. It began in late 2018 when Epic Games’ Fortnite helped convince the big console makers to play well. During the year 2019, the titles piled up, including Destiny 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Now Minecraft interferes in the fight, but there is a turn.
“PS4 players can now use their purchases and advances across platforms,” wrote Kelsey Howard of Mojang in today’s press release. This means that worlds, skins, mini-games and mas-up packages available on the Minecraft Marketplace are available on all platforms.
Minecraft is the bestselling game of all time and beats Tetris with 176 million units sold. In part, Polygon called it one of the most important games of the last decade.
