Moscow: gas price ceiling will threaten its access to European markets

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak confirmed that the adoption by the European Union of a gas price ceiling is a purely political decision and will pose a threat to gas supplies to European markets.

Commenting on the EU’s decision to introduce a ceiling on gas prices, Novak told reporters: “We see that this is yet another political decision, not an economic one at all. Our colleagues are making the same mistake again.”

He added: “President Vladimir Putin spoke about this during the Russian Energy Week forum and quoted a quote by Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize winner in economics, that if you want to create a shortage of tomatoes, all you need to do is introduce some restrictions on prices, and that’s what’s happening” with gas in the European Union.

He added that if “European colleagues do not want gas in Europe, and it is redirected to other markets, they only have to set a ceiling on its price.”

He pointed out that now it is necessary to see how the situation will develop, since now there are many doubts related to this decision of the European Union.
