Moscow: Israelis are fighting in the Ukrainian Azov battalion

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed today, Wednesday, that “Israeli mercenaries” are fighting in Ukraine alongside the Azov Brigade, which Moscow defines as “Nazi”, one day after the declarations relating to Hitler’s Jewish origin, which aroused strong controversy.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova explained: “I will say something that Israeli politicians probably don’t want to hear, but that could help them. In Ukraine, Israeli mercenaries stand side by side with Azov fighters,” according to radio “Sputnik. “.

By claiming that Israelis are fighting alongside Azov, Moscow continues to foment the controversy that began after Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke last Sunday about Adolf Hitler’s “Jewish blood”.

“A Terrible Historical Mistake”

Meanwhile, the statements angered Israel, which it described as “scandalous and unforgivable” and a “horrible historical mistake”.

And on Tuesday evening, the Russian Foreign Ministry poured fuel on the fire accusing Israel of “supporting the neo-Nazi regime in Kiev”, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a Jew.

The most ferocious opponent of the Russians

Interestingly, the Ukrainian Azov Brigade was founded in 2014 by far-right activists before being integrated into the regular forces and has proven to be one of the staunchest opponents of Russian forces that have launched a military strike against Ukraine since last February 24th.

Its members, along with other Ukrainian fighters, refused in particular of laying down their weapons in the besieged port of Mariupol (south-east), where the last defenders of the city are holed up in the Azovstal metallurgical plant, attacked Tuesday by the forces of Moscow.

A number of Ukrainians see Azov Brigade members as heroes, but Russia sees them as “fascists” and “Nazis” who commit atrocities.
